TODAYS MUSIC HAS NO SOUL... One of my Facebook friends wrote that there are 80% less songwriters than there were in 2000. later mentioned: All the jobs no longer be needed from the advancement of technology... I started thinking about the music I grew up listening to in the 60s, 70s and 80s. The majority of the artists played their own instruments and wrote their own songs. The life experiences of the artists went into the lyrics, guitar, drums, bass, etc. That is what made the bands fingerprint and set them apart from everyone else. This is what separated the Rolling Stones from the Beatles, the Who and the Kinks... This is what separated Fleetwood Mac from the Eagles, Jackson Browne and James Taylor. Today we have a handful of songwriters writing for the masses... Pharrell, will.i.am, Max Martin are the ones that jump right out when I think about it. Charli XCX grabbed Gwen Steffanis sound took it to a new level. Maybe I am wrong for saying Gwens sound since Pharrell had his hand in that project. Todays technology has replaced many studio musicians. When you listen to the hand claps is it live or technology? The string section of a song is it live or technology? The vocals, is it live or autotune? I have been in the studio while someone was beating away on a MPC, creating a new song and I asked... How many drummers are you going to need to play this live? Anyone who has played a music instrument knows that it becomes a part of who you are. How long you hold the note... How much pressure on the strings.. How hard you strum... Is the timing off just a bit... This is what makes up the DNA of a song and when you start bringing in technology the DNA is stripped. The song is sterilized of its soul and that is part of the problem with a lot of todays music. Here today gone later today... REAL INSTRUMENTS
