TODAYS RANT my my simplistic or common person way of describing the situation. This posted blog that I just read...is about the BEST complete story which explains why and how it is that we are into (possibly) week 5 of no school for BC kids. (2 weeks of June in last school year). Arbitration and legislation...two quick ways out....ARE NOT OPTIONS ....because this is the climax of a 12 year battle and the stakes are much higher and cannot be resolved with a quick and simple solution. This is the way it is...despite a common belief and obvious fact... that it is in the best interests of our precious school kids to get this resolved ASAP. It is as though the two parties are FINALLY and TRULY being forced (because of the 2 previous judgements by the courts) to follow a rule book this time...as cumbersome and taxing as it is on EVERYONE....because each and every well calculated step they take in this dispute will again, be ultimately judged against the constitutional charter of rights,(all the way to the Canada Supreme Court eventually) to see if each step was fair and legal. But most importantly, this is a well needed pause for the rest of us folks...who have not been in the loop and following the full story... to reflect, catch up on the information, and weigh in on the judges decision and her message: In her opinion...government has intentionally and strategically tried to sabatoge the BCTF.(and all unions for that matter) But in doing so, the government is not respecting the rule of law, and quite simply, by continuing to allow the government to ACT ABOVE THE LAW, is indeed a direct threat to the democratic process. It takes a while to get the big picture if you were not following the story for the last 12 years. And as busy parents, it is no doubt that this extreme inconvenience along with the manipulative sound bites of the government in attempt to QUICKLY persuade public opinion, is actually a union breaking strategy of government (and big business) that is UNLAWFUL. What this is really about, is not simply a dispute between the BCTF and the government, but it is actually a dispute between the judicial system and the government. The BC Libs and big business (which is why the Coalition of BC business has requested intervener status into this court proceeding) wish to pull together an argument that the Courts have NO AUTHORITY over fiscal decisions made by democratically elected governments. The judicial system is actually stating, however, in its previous decisions, that governments must act fairly in doing so, and by judging their methods and strategies, it is not acceptable for governments to use the kinds of deceitful strategies they do....to manage the finances of the province. OH...this is such a juicy big convoluted fight. But the reality is, for MOST PEOPLE, this is a disgraceful interruption which is costing a sacrifice of precious learning time for children, and costing thousands of dollars in lost salary by teachers*(bless them...they are far more about families first than CC), and costing hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars...for the BC LIberals to try to make a point about their need to ACT ABOVE THE LAW, in order to balance a budget and stay good to their promise to big business and corporations. Good grief. I am on the side of the teachers on this one. And as a parent, I will do my very very very best to educate others about the BIG PICTURE. so HOLD THE LINE. SUPPORT THE TEACHERS. DEFEND PUBLIC EDUCATION. The kids will be alright. In fact, thank-you teachers, most families now know that the kids will be way better off if you get even half of what you are asking in support for improved class size and composition.
