In this section from Nathan Oldfield’s Seaworthy, Tom paddles out on a 16 foot wooden “toothpick” board with sharp rails and a narrow tail. Similar to an alaia, the toothpick offers a smooth ride by reducing the friction between the board and the surface of the wave.
