The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, met Chinese President Xi Jinping shortly after his arrival in Fortaleza, Brazil, today on the eve of the Sixth BRICS Summit. The 80-minute meeting was the Prime Minister’s first summit-level interaction with China. 2. In a significant gesture, China today invited India for the first time to attend the APEC summit that it will be hosting this year as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping discussed the need for the two Asian giants to work together in international fora. 3. UK defence secretary Philip Hammond was today appointed the new foreign secretary as part of Prime Minister David Camerons biggest re-shuffle ahead of a general election next year. 4. Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen said on Tuesday that the US central bank will continue to keep interest rates at historic lows, while proceeding with its plan to taper the controversial stimulus measure known as quantitative easing. The United States is selling $11 billion worth of military equipment to the Gulf state of Qatar, including Apache helicopters and Patriot and Javelin defence systems, US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel had said. 10. The third oldest football tournament in the world, Durand Cup, will be held in Goa between October 28 and November 9 this year. A host of top clubs and military football teams will participate in the tournament. Durand Cup was first held in the year 1888.
