TOUGH LOVE CAN BE DIFFICULT TO MANAGE... Over the past couple years, I have been giving relatively large sums of money to a friend who was living out of state and FAR below the poverty level. It broke my heart to see her struggling. As time went on however, I began to realize that no matter how much I gave her, she was always broke. With a job or without a job, it didnt matter--she was always broke, broke, BROKE! Intuitively, I began to see through what had been going on: She was using me as she had been using others in her life--taking MY money so she wouldnt have to earn it herself. After it became clear that she had diverted some of the funds to vacations (yep, airfare to exotic places!) I decided to cut her off. It was a very difficult thing to do. Days passed and I began to see myself as the bad guy for refusing to CARRY her any longer. Then, my EGO jumped in and I went so far as to think I should get my money back....and I tried, and tried and tried...but to NO avail. Thats when I came to the realization that there is a huge difference between caring for someone and CARRYING someone. Eventually, I was able to forgive it all, let it go and move on. But I wish I had learned the lesson sooner and I wish I had allowed her to do the same. Ill be more discerning next time. Better yet, there wont be a next time. jah
