TRADERS PROTEST RELOCATION OF UGHELLI MARKET For the second time in less than two months, Ughelli traders, yesterday, thronged the streets of Ughelli town, Delta State, in protest over the state government’s move to relocate the main market in the town to the Ughelli/Ogor ultra-modern market. The protest, which lasted hours, grounded commercial activities in the area. The placard carrying protesters with various inscriptions marched to the palace of the Ovie of Ughelli Kingdom, HRM Oharisi III to express their displeasure. Secretary of the Otor-Iwhreko community, where the Ughelli main market is situated, Mr. Daniel Uloho, said: “The demolition of the main market, which is the only legacy left behind for us by our ancestors, will have negative impact on the socio-economic lives of our people. “If the essence of government is to protect and initiate policies that are in the best interest of the people, then government should not use its machinery to oppress the people it is governing.” Chairman of the Ughelli main market, Mr. Paul Ojakovo, who also spoke during the protest, said “shutting down and relocating the market will endanger the lives of old women and children as a result of the long distance to the ultra-modern market.”
