TRINITY ARSENAULT (14) Marathon swimming continues to benefit - TopicsExpress

TRINITY ARSENAULT (14) Marathon swimming continues to benefit from new technologies that provide almost real-time visualization of the progress and performance of a swimmer. SPOT Trackers have been a great advance in this respect with their satellite links to the internet and immediate visualization of the swimmers location and course `during the swim. Analysis of GPS data to obtain Speed (To assess the effects of tiring, feeds or currents) can be tedious if you have to use Excel spreadsheets-and-such to compute the data; however, now there are freebie software packages that can automate these calculations and displays. Thanks to fellow computer geeks Mike Morton (Oakville, LOST group) and Jen Alexander (of Northumberland Strait fame), I was introduced to uTrack and GPSResults. I love the ease, accuracy and versatility of the GPSResults package, and below is an example of its application to Trinity Aarsenault`s recent crossing of Lake Erie as the youngest person. Total distance (19.05 km), total time (445 Minutes), and average speed are displayed (Left pane), and the Speed (km/h) vs Time (Bottom pane), and the course with its data points (green track on left in top pane). The grid in the upper pane represents 10 km squares. Trinity plans to hit the water on Sunday evening for her Lake Ontario crossing, so look for updates.
