TROOP L - NEWS RELEASE January 24, 2015 Speed Contributed to St. Tammany Parish Fatal Crash This afternoon, shortly before 4:00 pm, Louisiana State Police Troop L investigated a fatal crash on LA 1088 near Fish Hatchery Road. The crash claimed the life of 56 year-old Brian Chopin of Mandeville, LA. Preliminary investigation revealed that Chopin was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Corvette north on LA 1088 at a high rate of speed. The vehicle entered a curve near Fish Hatchery Road and departed the roadway to the right. Chopin overcorrected the vehicle and lost control. The vehicle became airborne before striking several trees. The front seat passenger and Chopin’s wife, 53 year-old Lori Chopin of Mandeville, LA, was transported to St. Tammany Parish Hospital with moderate injuries. Brian Chopin was pronounced dead on the scene. Both occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Impairment is unknown and toxicology results are pending an autopsy. The crash remains under investigation. According to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, speeding directly contributed to nearly 40 fatalities in 2013. Motorists should pay attention to speed limits and only travel at the posted speed limit when safe to do so, keeping in mind weather and road conditions.
