TUESDAY, 9/23/14 GOSPELS. Matthew 10:17-20 (Page 1040 in the TLASB) “Who is Jesus Talking To?” (By Barry) WORSHIP: Let’s ask the “Word of God” (Jesus) to speak to us today! https://youtube/watch?v=W8cJQMU9Q-U SCRIPTURE: blueletterbible.org/Bible.cfm?b=Mat&c=10&t=NLT#s=939017 17 But beware! For you will be handed over to the courts and will be flogged with whips in the synagogues. 18 You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell the rulers and other unbelievers about me. 19 When you are arrested, don’t worry about how to respond or what to say. God will give you the right words at the right time. 20 For it is not you who will be speaking—it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Today’s 555 is being divided into two sections. We will look at the first section today, and next Tuesday, we will look at the same verses from a different perspective. SECTION 1. Who is He talking to? Jesus has sent out His disciples, and given them some specific instructions. Some of these words, I think, were meant specifically for them, and many of the things He had to say were intended for us, as well. As a review, let’s look at some of His words we have read in Matthew 10 so far, and let’s decide who Jesus is talking to. When we are reading the Bible, it is REALLY important that we understand who the audience is. Otherwise, we can believe some STRANGE stuff! For each example, tell me if these instructions are for the original apostles, or for us, as well, and explain why! — 1. “Don’t go the Gentiles. Go only to the Jews.” Verses 5-6. — 2. “Announce that the Kingdom of Heaven is near!” (Verse 7) — 3. “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure disease, and cast out demons!” (Verse 8) —4. “Don’t take anything with you. Don’t have any money, or a change of clothes.” (Verses 9-10) —5. “When you enter a city or village, search for a worthy person and stay in his home until you leave town.” (Verse 11) — 6. “Be as shrewd as snakes, and harmless as doves.” (Verse 16) — 7. “Don’t hesitate to accept hospitality.” (Verse 10) The purpose of these questions in Section One is this: If I am going to be a serious student of the Bible, I must learn the context of the verses I read. Jesus has amazing things to say in today’s passage. Does He want YOU to announce the Good News? Of course! Does He want you to ignore Gentiles, and concentrate only on Jews? Probably not! Does He want you to heal the sick, and raise the dead, and cast out demons? Well, does He? (Next Week: Section 2. “Who is Talking Through Me?”) PRAYER: Ask God to help you become a SERIOUS student of the Bible. Ask Him to help you VALUE it greatly. Most of all, ask Him to create a spirit of absolute obedience in you!
