TV Spoiler-ey stuff for Gotham. The spouse and I just finished - TopicsExpress

TV Spoiler-ey stuff for Gotham. The spouse and I just finished watching the second episode of Gotham; here are some completely unsolicited thoughts. This might be the best TV cast I’ve ever seen. No joke it’s not just high caliber “recognizable” actors/actresses (question can I just make actor a gender neutral term it really gets on my nerves to have to use both but I feel like I’m slighting the ladies if I don’t just a thought) it’s the fact that so far every single casting choice seems to have nailed the character, at least those we’ve seen enough of to make a judgment. Seriously I came to watch the guy they have playing Bullock and he’s all over it. Gordon is fantastic, Fish Mooney is stealing every scene she shows up in, the Mayor oh god the mayor so glad that guy’s getting to do some dramatic stuff, ect ect. The acting/casting choices are going to make this series hard to screw up. The Penguin arc is looking um “interesting” I’m not sure if I like it or not but I don’t know why between this and Batman Returns the idea of a “gentlemen” crook is just too much for them to swallow. Batman’s rogue’s gallery is full of every kind of disturbed, demented, and damaged human and quasi-human imaginable the Penguin always felt like a breath of normal-esque fresh air when he appeared in the comics or the cartoon. Time will tell how good this version is but the fact that I’m having slight Batman Returns flashback, is enough to make me wary. P.S. Warner Bros never ever ever use the word Returns in a movie title again as movies with that name you make are so bad they give bad movies a bad name. I’m ambivalent about the Bullock and by extension Captain Essen arc’s at the moment. I understand the “just getting by and doing what we can” feel but I don’t want it pushed too far. I like Bullock in that he has a very large layer of nuance unusual among comic book cops. He’s a little corrupt but still a good cop, if not necessarily a “good guy”. Sarah Essen was always as much a White Knight as Gordon and I hope we see something more to her than just a “system” cop. We haven’t seen enough of Montoya yet but she was always an interesting character in the books so I have high hopes for her. Over all the compression/changing of the ages of some of the characters are a bit disorientating to me but I think I like it. It seems to be trying to be “A” Batman story and not “The” Batman story. I think that’s a great idea that leaves plenty of room for a good show. Overall we both really like it so far and I have some pretty high hopes, heck I’m pretty sure someone who didn’t give a crap about the Bat could watch and enjoy this show, and that as Marvel has proved with its movies is really the true measure of success. Well that and fat stacks of cash…
