TWO QUICK THEOLOGY LESSONS FROM THE THREE AMIGOS AND DR. WHO Theology Lesson #1 Steve Martin as Amigo Lucky Day gives the following inspirational speech to inhabitants from a small village who are about to be attacked by an army of bandits furiously charging toward them on horseback and armed to the teeth. Carmen, a brave village girl, speaks up to the fearful peasants, Some day the people of this village will have to face El Guapo, we might as well do it now. Steve Martin as Lucky Day then takes the podium seeking to inspire the crowd to fight: In a way, all of us have an El Guapo to face someday. For some, shyness might be their El Guapo; For others, a lack of education might be their El Guapo; For us, El Guapo is a big dangerous guy who wants to kill us. But as sure as my name is Lucky Day, the people of Santa Poco can conquer their own personal El Guapo who also happens to be the actual El Guapo. The Point? In this day of reducing Satan to a mere mythological idea or psychological dynamic, remember that there is an actual El Guapo who still seeks to destroy you with pride, lies, lust and condemnation. He is a defeated foe, but only as you enforce Christs victory by steadfastly resisting Satans wiles with your faith. Theology Lesson #2 I was watching DR. WHO recently (a well known British Sci-Fi tv show). In the episode he comes face to face with Satan. This Satan is chained in a pit the entire episode except that he is able to still influence, and in some cases control, the minds of those who come within the gravitational pull of his prison. The closer the persons orbit gets to Satan, the greater the gravitational influence and control Satan is able to exert. The DR. starts telling Satan all the logical and scientific reasons why he (Satan) cant possibly exist, except as a superstitious idea. Satan then quips back in an amused tone, Is that YOUR religion? Satan then goes on to assert how each of those standing before him will die. And a few standing there do, especially those to whom Satan incessantly recounts their past sins. However, the good DR. defeats THIS Satan by believing MORE in the one whom he loves most. That ends up being a pretty good plan. Satan is defeated, his plans frustrated and they escape. The only thing the DR. had to do was to accept the ACTUALITY of this enemy. If he had let his religion, which in his case was his reliance on logic and rationality, control his actions, he would never have found the faith, working through love, to defeat a very real threat, a threat who was chained but still very dangerous. Bottom line, religion doesnt defeat Satan, whether its the faithless religion of the Sadducees or the faithless religion of science. Avoid Satans orbit. Dont over or underestimate Him. Jesus likened Satan to a strongman, but then referred to Himself as a much strongER man. Stay primarily focused on Jesus strength, but also vigilantly avoid the gravitational pull of Satan. Gideons 300 warriors were special because they kept their peripheral vision on the horizon guarding for oncoming enemies even AS they drank the waters of life. Keep Jesus always in the center of your vision, but keep Satan locked in your peripheral.
