TY Foundation Empowers 100 Kaduna Youths With Agric Skills, As part of effort of promoting self-employment among the youths in the country, the T. Y. Foundation has trained and empowered over 100 rural youths in poultry and vegetable farming. The project, which aims at encouraging the youths to engage in income generation through cooperative and financial management as well as borehole management, was done in five communities of Kaduna State. Speaking during the graduation and presentation of start-up packs in Kaduna yesterday, the state commissioner for agriculture, Mr Isaac Bodam, called on other non-governmental organisations to make youth empowerment in agriculture their priority, saying that it is a panacea to reducing idleness and poverty, and boosting the economy. The commissioner, who was represented director of training and empowerment in the Ministry Mr Vashti Z. Shamaki, said empowering youths in agriculture will impact positively on the society. “There is always a positive and multiplying effect in the society whenever the youths acquire training in different skills and agricultural techniques, or are directly empowered in meaningful ventures. When the youths are empowered, families would be strengthened, poverty and idleness will tremendously reduce, food security will be guaranteed and violence in the society will reduce. “So I commend the T. Y. Foundation for this training and empowerment of 100 rural youths for income generation through poultry and vegetable farming, cooperative and financial management as well as borehole management in five communities. I enjoin non- governmental organisations not only in Kaduna State but the nation as a whole to give priority to youth training, counseling and empowerment,” Shamaki said. In his remarks, the programme director and executive director of Gender and Human Values Proactive, Kaduna, Dr Joseph F. Appah, said the programme will achieve its desired goal and boost agriculture in the state, because the chances of failure of the project has been largely minimised and the capacity of the beneficiaries has been well built. He said the beneficiaries have been provided with sufficient poultry and farming implements that will enable them to take off effectively.
