Tafsir Surah Al-Bayyinah This Surah clarifies that those who disbelieve in Allah and His Messenger (P) amongst the people of the Book – are from amongst the polytheists and they are the idol-worshipers amongst the Arabs – were not going to all change their ways of disbelief, until the decisive proof came to them in the form of the mission of the Prophet (P). Once that proof came to them, they rejected his mission and disbelieved in him. These ayahs indicate that the clear evidence (Bayyinah) is “a Messenger from Allah” and the Jews had been eagerly awaiting his coming. They used to threaten the Arabs that when he came, they would believe in him, and they would fight against the Arabs alongside him. However, when the clear evidence came, and the Messenger (P) was sent with the Truth and the Qur’an which coincided with what the People of the Book have of the Torah and the Gospel, they disbelieved in him (P) and rejected his Prophet hood because he was an Arab, he was not from Bani Israil. This Messenger (P) was send to the Creation by Allah recites to them that which Allah has taught him to recite and gathered together for him in his breast. He recites pages from the Qur’an that are purified of falsehood. They contain upright teachings and laws which contain no crookedness and express the truth. The people of the Book did not become divided about the Prophet hood of Muhammad (P) and the Truth of His Message – such that some believed and others disbelieved – except after the Prophet (P) was sent and while they possessed full knowledge of his characteristics. However, it was fitting that they should all believe in him, so that they could be a single unit in following him. However, they became divided and differed, and they denied his Prophet hood and disbelieved in his religion. What is more, the People of the Book have not been ordered with anything, whether in their scripture or in the Scripture of Muhammad (P) except that they should worship Allah sincerely devoting their religion to Him, while inclining away from falsehood and towards the Truth, and to establish prayer and give Zakah. And that is the true, upright religion. Thus, what Muhammad has brought them is the same as that which is found in their Scripture which Allah has sent down to them. Then Allah speaks about the status of both the disbelievers and the believers in the worldly life and of their recompense in the Hereafter. As for the disbelievers from among the People of the Book and from amongst the Mushrikin of the Arabs – because of their disbelief in the truth, they are all in the Fire of Hell. They will dwell in it for eternity and they are the worst of creatures. As for those who believe and do righteous deeds, they are the best of creation. Their reward with their Lord is gardens in which they will dwell eternally in a state of bliss, with rivers flowing underneath them. Allah will have accepted their deeds and He will be well-pleased with them. Also, they will be pleased with Him and they will be delighted with all that He has honored them with. The only one who deserves this Divine Pleasure and eternal bliss is the one who fears his Lord and as a result, he believes in Him and obeys Him.
