Taft, like many other towns, purchased surplus military equipment. Last year, the Taft Police Department aquirred an MRAP, an armored vehicle similar to the Humvee the department already had. Taft Police Cheif, Ed Whiting expained why the need for the two, saying that in the event of a stand off with one or more armed suspects, the public police would be afforded protection through sheilding. Two additional benefits the MRAP offers that the Humvee lacks is air conditioning and the ability to travel at higher speeds, to get to situations in outlying areas. Whiting was referring the the Humvees maximum speed of about 45 miles per hour.
