Take care when walking in the New Forest – the Forestry - TopicsExpress

Take care when walking in the New Forest – the Forestry Commission is warning dog owners about the possible presence of “Alabama Rot” - a disease which leads to kidney failure. Notices are being put up in the New Forest stating owners should take dogs to a vet should they develop lesions on their legs, paws, or faces. Owners are warned to get their dogs to a vet even if skin wounds appear a week after a walk. The disease is thought to be responsible for the deaths of 17 dogs across Britain in recent months, the majority of whom had walked in the New Forest. Others passed away after walking in Surrey, Cornwall, Worcestershire, and Country Durham. The source of the disease is unknown. David Walker, a vet at Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists in Hursley, near Winchester, said: What I would say is that if you see a skin wound on your dog then dont just leave it. Ordinarily you might say Ill leave that for 24, 48 hours - I would say dont do that, get down to your local vet. Some dogs suffering from this disease have pulled through. Please do not panic, but do exercise caution. See more at: bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-25781287
