Taking a somewhat different tack from Boyd, I wanted to point out - TopicsExpress

Taking a somewhat different tack from Boyd, I wanted to point out that what brought most Indians (and Asians) to the US was the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 (which is less than 50 years old). Prior to that non-whites like Indians (and Asians) were prohibited from immigrating to the US (see article below for details) and an extract from there: In order to convince the American people of the legislations merits, its proponents assured that passage would not influence Americas culture significantly. President Johnson called the bill not a revolutionary bill. It does not affect the lives of millions, while Secretary of State Dean Rusk estimated only a few thousand Indian immigrants over the next five years, and other politicians, including Senator Ted Kennedy, hastened to reassure the populace that the demographic mix would not be affected; these assertions would later prove grossly inaccurate The public was clearly misled since this Act changed America from an over 90% white majority, homogeneous culture to the multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-religious country it is now, where it is estimated that whites will no longer be the majority in the near future. Is this radical change in the demographics in such a short time span overall good for America or bad for America? I believe it is debatable. What do you think? I hope some daring souls will wade into this topic .....
