Taking advantage of being in London, last night we went to the National Theatre to see Nuts, a moving, but not uplifting, play about a family dealing with Schizophrenia. On our return to the boat, Poppy was so excited to see us that she missed her footing when she jumped off the boat onto the pontoon. We were confronted with the horrifying sight of her sliding backwards into the dark murky water between boat and pontoon. By good luck I happened to be on the pontoon at the time, not on the boat, and I was able to grab her by the scruff of her neck and haul her out. Probably Kate and I were more shocked than she was; after a couple of shakes she was bouncing again and trotting off down the pontoon for her last walk. Kate has professionalised my slides for this afternoons talk at the Royal Society, I just need to do a bit of rehearsal now. In some ways it is more embarrassing doing this in front of Kate and Poppy than a large audience!
