Talk about serendipity...?!? I began watching what I thought was the 1975 film called Bug (a SciFi/Horror about mutated and deadly coackroaches) by Jeannot Szwarc but then quicly realized I mislabelled the film. What I watched was the psychological thriller/horror of the same name but directed by William Friedkin (2006) about two kinda sad and lonely people. One of them (Shannon) turns out to be suffering from something like Morgellons (delusional parasitosis)--a form of psychosis whose victims acquire a strong delusional belief that they are infested with parasites, whereas in reality no such parasites are present. Ashley Judd and Michael Shannon are incredible (like Paris, Texas incredible) in this film. It opens as a slice-of-(everyday down and out) life film ala Raymond Carver. The second character (Judd) develops a case of Folie à deux (one person comes to believe anothers delusion) and, well, it spirals down from there. This is really, really, really worth seeing if for no other reason than to see how mental health issues present (most people with severe methal health issues do not present as having severe mental health issues) and how a psychosis can unfold (again, not as Hollywood--however extreme the outcome, in real life even--as people often expect). Its categorized as a horror film, but its really not (Friedkin was interviewed saying it isnt and that putting it into this genre is just what the industry does). The thing is, you never really know if this is actual conspiracy or delusional psychosis....thats what makes the film so captivating (and relevant). Helena will find this interesting and disturbing.... If you simply enjoy well written, acted, and shot psychological thrillers youll also really enjoy this.....
