Tara Lanzerotti I think I am officially ready to have a nervous breakdown. I actually received an email blast from Wheaton North High Schools Guidance Department today, informing illegal alien students that there is a conference being held to help them not only apply, but get SCHOLARSHIPS for US colleges. Here is the original email, as well as my response. On Monday, March 10, 2014 8:17 AM, Mary Bischoff wrote: Undocumented students, their parents and allies are invited to attend the College DREAMers Conference at the Illinois Institute of Technology on Saturday, March 22, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. This event will provide access to resources for students and families throughout the state of Illinois. Local community based organizations will be sharing information with attendees on immigrant-friendly initiatives in their own neighborhoods. Scholarship providers will provide information regarding important deadlines and action items. This citywide resource fair is open to students, parents, school staff and community members. There is no limit on the number of those who can attend, but attendees are asked to register using the link below. chooseyourfuture.org/events/dreamers ------------------------------------------ Ms. Bischoff, I cannot begin to describe how angry I was to receive this email. I cannot afford to send my own citizen-children to college, even though my husband and I are both legal citizens and pay taxes through legal, full-time employment. We make too much for my children to qualify for financial aid, even though our cars have over 125,000 miles on them, we cant afford to pay our mortgage (and we did NOT buy the so-called McMansion on an interest-only mortgage), we dont even have cable anymore because we cant afford it, and I dont buy any junk food at the grocery store anymore because I cant even afford regular groceries. I cannot imagine illegally entering and residing in any other country on the planet (go ahead, choose any one you want), and then expect to get free food, medical care, housing, spending cash...and now access to higher education, with financial assistance no less. No, if I did this is any other country on the planet, I would not get ANY benefits, and emails would not be sent on my behalf on how I can further scam the citizens of that country...I would be imprisoned. I realize you did not create this DREAM legislation, but until enough legal citizens stop being polite and keep quietly turning the other cheek, and not expressing how ridiculous this legislation is, especially when those of us here legally cannot afford to take care of our own families, with 2 parents working full-time, this craziness is not going to end. Please DO NOT send me any other emails containing ANY information on benefits for people that are in my country illegally. Please stop using politically-correct euphemisms. They are NOT undocumented immigrants. They are illegal aliens, just like I would be called if I were in their country illegally. Reading this email was a kick in the stomach, made especially worse since I received my own citizen-daughters FAFSA report last week, stating that she is getting no need-based assistance. If you have any information on how my children who have 4.3 GPAs in AP classes, who are citizens of the US, whose parents are citizens of the US, and pay taxes through legal employment which then go to support illegal aliens who would be thrown in jail in any other country, can get any other financial assistance, I would gladly receive those emails from you. Thank you, Tara Lanzerotti
