Applied Studies in Culture and Diversity This course will explore culture and diversity in a multi-faceted and applied manner. Readings in this class will serve to support a theoretical and foundational comprehension of culture and diversity. Additionally, students will be encouraged to challenge personal perceptions of concepts related to culture, diversity, race, and gender, and will be encouraged to elicit humanistic reactions to their experiences while tackling any personal biases held. This course is designed to provide students with concepts, insight, and skills that can be applied throughout the course, in their communities and beyond. Students will be able to: • Explain contexts of culture and diversity • Recognize personal understanding and experiences with culture • Challenge current perceptions of diversity • Analyze how culture and diversity serve as a backdrop for all facets of life including personal experiences, career, community, and society. • Identify critical tools to be applied in culturally sensitive and charged situations • Implemental knowledge gained with regard to diversity in a real-world setting Texts: One text book will be required for this class as well as several popular press books as supplemental materials.
