Team Luke, As of this afternoon, the Mulch fire is 95-98% extinguished and the land owner believes he will have it completely out by tonight except for those isolated hot spots that will continue to pop-up and smolder over the next few days. Also, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and Maricopa County are reporting good air quality at all their sensing locations. I went out with our Civil Engineering Squadron Commander and took these pictures of just how big a fire this was, and how much area was effected. As you can see, this was not a fire that could be extinguished with fire trucks. It takes continuous amounts of water to soak into the mulch as well as very heavy machinery to push the burning embers into pools of water located in the pit. A big shout out to theLuke AFB Fire Department. They were the first on-scene last Saturday night to battle this blaze, and their direct involvement with the land owner is the reason we got this under control so quickly...Well done! -Rolls
