#TeamPiruloyLaTribu By José Massó from The Boston Globe Speaks on the Future of Pirulo y La Tribu : This past week I had a chance to spend some time with Orlin Goble, a good friend of mine who was visiting from Puerto Rico.He introduced me to the music of a young man he is currently working with by the name of Francisco Rosado Rosario, known as “Pirulo” and leader of his musical group “Pirulo y La Tribu”. Orlin mentioned that Pirulo’s father was a musician as he played a few seconds from the tracks on his laptopand I was blown away. Pirulo has a funky, urban, salsa dura street sound that is based in salsa but has elements of Cuban timba and reggaeton. I was intrigued about this very talented singer, songwriter, producer, and drummer so I looked him up and found out that he was born in 1977 in El Barrio Embalse San Jose, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. As a child he would listen to different musical styles courtesy of his mother, Nydia “Negrita” Rosario Medina. She was born in Barrio Obrero in the capital city and his father, Frankie Rosado was a Nuyorican musician who was born in Brooklyn, New York and played flute. Growing up he would listen to Irakere, Dave Valentin, Los Van Van, George Benson, Rafael Cortijo and Ismael Rivera among others. He studied oboe, bass and percussion at La Escuela Libre de Música in San Juan and began his professional career with “La Revolución Latina” a salsa orchestra. After graduating in 1995 he dedicated himself full time to music playing with local bands and a wide range of styles from salsa, rumba, jazz, Latin jazz and pop. He played with Giovanni Hidalgo, Anthony Carrillo, Pupi Santiago, Edgar Abraham, Julio Sabala, Yolandita Monge, Iris Chacón, Alfredo y Los Rumberos, Puya and several others. In 1997-1998 he received a scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston and started his studies in 2000. While in Boston he played jazz, salsa, rock, Latin jazz and pop, traveling throughout the United States, Canada and Cuba with Bob Dylan, Maceo Parker, Either Orchestra, Entrain and the Ayala Folkloric Group. Pirulo returned to Puerto Rico in 2004 and joined White Lion Records, producers of the popular urban sounds of Tego Calderón, Calle 13, Jowell y Randy, and Julio Voltio. He quickly developed as a lyricist, singer and producer recording with Tego Calderón (“El Abayarde Contra-ataca”) and Julio Voltio. In 2008 he was one of the producers and participants in “Más Salsa que tú” a recording that united Salsa icons Papo Lucca, Roberto Roena, William Cepeda, Piro Rodríguez, Giovanni Hidalgo, Dave Valentín, Richie Flores and others with Pirulo and hip-hop artists such as Joseph “El Mola” Carret from Cuba, and Manuel “Myzta” Gómez from Puerto Rico. For the next four years he would perform as the drummer and musical director for Tego Calderón. His new CD is titled “Calle Linda” featuring 12 tracks written by Pirulo.
