Teen Talk: Bible Reading: Ephesians 5:1 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. (NKJ) WHAT DO the following people have in common: Baseball’s Ken Griffey, Jr., Actress Gwenyth Paltrow, Singer Natalie Cole, Actor Kiefer Sutherland, Congressman Joe Kennedy, Race car driver Michael Andretti, Football Players Eli and Peyton Manning. OK, OK, yes they’re all famous. Yeah, yeah, their names all begin with capital letters. But can you think of anything else? Here are a few hints: Ken Griffey Jr.’s father played baseball for the Reds, Mariners, and other teams. Gwenyth Paltrow’s dad, Bruce Paltrow, was a movie director, and her mom, Bythe Danner, is an actress. Natalie Cole’s dad was a famous singer. Kiefer’s dad is actor Donald Sutherland, Joe Kennedy is the son of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy. Michael Andretti’s dad is race car legend, Mario, and Archie Manning was quarterbacking in the NFL long before his boys even picked up a ball. All the people listed above are the sons or daughters of someone who achieved success and fame in sports, politics, or entertainment. If you talked to them, some would probably say they wanted to follow in their parent’s footsteps. Others probably say they pursued their careers in spite of Mom’s and Dad’s objections. Yet, still others might have learned so much from Dad that it was only natural for them to excel in the same field. Probably most-if not all-of their parents were pleased when their sons and daughters chose to follow in their footsteps. Which brings us to God, our Heavenly Father. He’s pleased when we choose follow in His footsteps. That’s why He gives us instruction through His word on how we can be more like Him. Now it may not always be easy to walk in God’s footsteps, but no matter what we become, famous athletes, singers, actors, or something else entirely, God wants us to be just like Him, and walk out our life in love. He’s even willing to help us, through the work of His Holy Spirit, who lives inside us. REFLECT: Has anyone in your family followed in his or her parents’ footsteps? Are you following in God’s footsteps? If so, in what ways? If not, how can you do so? PRAYER: Dear Heavenly Father, I’m so grateful that I have you, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, as my Dad. Thank you for sending your Son, Jesus, to earth to show me how I can follow in your footsteps. In Jesus’ precious name I pray. I love you, Amen. ~Spread the Love ~
