Telling the Hypocrites from the Real McCoys - The IRS has been under fire recently for their harassment of Tea Party and other conservative groups in their attempts at gain 501c3 tax exempt status. Also, more recently, for spending almost 50 million dollars of tax-payer money for lavish retreats to conduct “employee training”. The IRS, the supposed bastion of equality and indiscriminate fairness apparently being a little more discriminating than we thought, and folks are outraged, and rightfully so. The IRS’s actions have been criminal, at worst, and hypocritical, at best but should we really be surprised? Things are seldom as squeaky clean as they seem on the surface, people, organizations, and certainly governments. Sadly, this is nothing new. Jesus was pointing out the hypocrisy of the culture and its leaders in the text we’ll examine together on Sunday from His Sermon on the Mount, and was honestly quite pointed about it. None of us like to be called out, especially if we’ve rationalized our behavior in our minds for so long that we can now no longer see the wrong in it. But in reality, we’ve all been hypocritical about one thing or another, haven’t we? The real difference lies in making a conscious choice to either stay there and rationalize that place or to change, change our thinking and, consequently, our behavior. We’ll discover some scriptural tools to not only help us see that more clearly, but also the challenge to move. Move away from hypocrisy and into Authenticity, something we have all been called to and something that’s one of the foundational tenets of CrossPoint Church. The secret? It often boils down to motive, and that’s a matter of the heart. Come to the mountain and see.
