Tendai Maraire, who has previously performed under the aliases Boy Wonder, Sukutai, and C.A.V.E., returns to his mbira roots for FringeArts showing of The Beautiful Noise: A Tribute to Sun Ra. Born in Zimbabwe to Shona music pioneers Lora Chiorah and Dumisani Maraire, Tendai grew up performing Shona music with his family and learned to play a multitude of percussion instruments. In later years, Maraire began rapping under the name Boy Wonder and started his own record label Maraire Enterprises. He has opened for hip-hop legends Snoop Dogg and Slick Rick, and also collaborated with artists like Vitamin D, Jay Hits, and Butterfly of Digable Planets, who he still performs with to this day under the Seattle-based experimental hip-hop collective Shabazz Palaces. We are thrilled to have Tendai Maraire perform in The Beautiful Noise: A Tribute to Sun Ra. The show takes place on Friday, June 6th at 8 PM in the FringeArts building on Race and Columbus. Tickets are still available here: bit.ly/thebeautifulnoise ($15 in advance, $20 at the door, and FringeArts members get 30% off)
