Th Channeled Billed Cuckoo is back and can be recognised by its lonely call as it flys into New South Wales under cover of darkness. This cuckoo is the largest such bird in the world measuring almost a metre in length from the tip of its long pointed beak to its grey and white barbed tail. It is easy to identify during daylight hours as its shape in the sky resembles a cross, wings and tail stretched parallel to its body. Like all other cuckoos, the Channeled Bill lays its eggs in other birds nests, here in Oz the unfortunate Currawong (see photo) or Magpie. The influx of these the birds must now be totalled in the thousands and have definitely increased in the seventeen years that I have lived in Australia. Since they are a native of Papua New Guinea I consider them as a threat to our native bird population but there seems to be no stance being made regarding them considering Australias standing on the Cane Toad.
