Thai authorities consider state of emergency as violence erupts ... Thai authorities are considering a state of emergency after violence in Bangkok this weekend led to dozens of injuries. One man was killed and dozens of people were wounded, some seriously, when grenades were thrown at anti-government protesters in the north of the city near Victory Monument on Friday and Sunday. The security chief has said that protesters have threatened to close various government offices but so far the closures have been symbolic. He said if their tactics change, the chance for unrest increases and they may have to invoke the emergency law. National Security Council chief Paradorn Pattantabutr told Reuters: Were prepared to use the emergency decree ... Everyone involved including the police, the military and the government is considering this option very seriously, but has not yet come to an agreement. The emergency decree gives security agencies broad powers to impose curfews, detain suspects without charge, censor media, ban political gatherings of more than five people and declare parts of the country off limits. The Tourism Authority of Thailand said yesterday: The situation has become unstable at some protest areas and rally routes with incidents occurred over the last couple of days and during early this afternoon (a double blast at the Victory Monument, one of the demonstrators main stages). These incidents are under investigations. Although, no tourist was hurt by any of the incidents, tourists are advised to be vigilant and avoid the rally locations as well as areas where large crowds of demonstrators may gather, including routings of the anti-government demonstrators daily marches.
