In India alone, the Ramayana or the story of Rama, has several versions in different languages such as Sanskrit, Hindi, Tamil, and Assamese. The most important version, considered the holy book of the Hindus, second in importance only to the Veda. Beside India, the story of the Ramayana spread to Southeast Asia and was translated into the vernacular of Thailand. Indonesia, Malaya, Cambodia, Vietnam, Burma, Laos and the Philipines. In Thailand there are several versions and forms of the Ramakian both court-sponsored and local editions.
