Thane cops seek funds for unit devoted to kids. Thane Police Commissioner Vijay Kambles brainchild of launching Indias first full-fledged Child Protection Unit took root last month. But, with a paucity of funds preventing the venture from growing, the police are trying to rope in corporate houses to give the initiative a boost. The police have approached several business houses — including a childrens entertainment giant and an industrial conglomerate — to pull in funds and carry the endeavour further. Cops say CPU is the first police branch focusing mainly on child trafficking cases. The search for children who went missing 15 years ago, as well as recent cases, is being carried out by five teams formed under CPU. The cops handling these cases are dressed in plain clothes, as many dont feel comfortable talking to uniformed policemen. The officers will ensure their appearance is such that children will relate to them, said DCP Parag Manere of Thane Crime Branch.
