Thank you Canadians for Bill C-279 - The Transgender Rights Bill https://facebook/groups/119879024809922/ Bill C-279, adding gender identity and expression to Canadian Human Rights Act, has made it to the Canadian Senate. As long as an election isnt called and the Senate approves (which it should because it was approved by he House of Commons, our elected representatives) the bill will pass and the law will change in Canada to include gender identity and expression to prohibit discrimination and to amend the Criminal Code of Canada to include gender identity and expression under hate crimes. You can e-mail a letter to any Senator to express your support. Please follow this link to Senate directory: parl.gc.ca/SenatorsMembers/Senate/SenatorsBiography/ISenator.asp?Language=E Attached is a sample letter expressing support of the bill: Senate Letter C-279.doc I contacted the Information Service for the Parliament of Canada and I was advised that any Senator will do and you can send it to all Senators. While the bill was in the House of Commons, only the Conservative representatives voted against passing the bill. (all but 15 vote no ) This indicates to me that only the Conservative Senators would vote against this bill. Conservative Senator Nancy Ruth, the only openly out lesbian in Senate history, has slowed the approval of the bill with a proposed amendment to include women in the Criminal Code section on hate crimes. In her attempts to protect one group of victims of crime she is potentially killing the bill that would provide recognition and rights of a more marginalized group. Feel free to send her the letter. Trans* people are among the most marginalized persons in our society. In trying to live their lives, they often encounter great difficulty in finding employment and medical services and face threats of violence and violence. Canadian provinces: Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and the Northwest Territories, have added gender identity and gender expression to provincial laws of equal rights and opportunities without discrimination but is limited to Provincial law. Currently, hate crime legislation in the Criminal Code of Canada does not include trans* people. In 2000, the Canadian Human Rights Act Review Panel, former Supreme Court of Canada Justice Gerard La Forest reported his recommendation to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act by adding gender identity and expression to the list of illegal reasons for discrimination. For 13 years the Government of Canada has been aware of this issue and has yet to pass into law the prescribed protection for trans* people. It is time to have this bill become law. Thank you for your consideration, Sincerely, [Your Name] [Your Address]
