Thank you all for all the well wishes for Sable- she is doing very well after surgery, and though its a long recovery, I anticipate shell be a total rockstar. Yesterday, in addition to commuting to Virginia and admitting my dog for invasive surgery, I had to say goodbye to one of my best friends. I had the pleasure of knowing and caring for Chewbacca for nearly 14 years, almost half of my life. He was silly, he was snuggly, he never failed to call for me if he thought I was being slow with bringing in for dinner. Once upon a time, he would gallop to the gate to meet me. In recent years, hed slowed down considerably and had to be content with a more sedate pace- more of a mosey than anything else, though he was still rambunctious enough to canter away from the gate in the morning. He was an exemplary babysitter for both young horses and inexperienced riders, and never failed to try his best at whatever task was set in front of him. He had his quirks- a strange fondness for sour cream and onion potato chips, an inability to pick up his leads inside the arena but just fine without a fence. He was a charmer that could win anybodys heart over in mere minutes, and Im definitely not the only one that will miss him. Run free, handsome boy, unfettered by old-horse arthritis, failing kidneys and this bitter cold that the rest of us get to enjoy for the next few months. Enjoy the grass, say hi to the other friends weve lost, and have a good roll- you wont get stuck this time.
