Thank you to James Farley for providing me his coupon for a free entre at California Fish Grill yesterday. This small chain seafood restaurant does not officially open until Wednesday but in the grand tradition of eatery openings, the restaurant threw a soft opening and gave away everything. A couple hundred people must have filed through the place over the course of the 3 hours they were open and everyone ate for free. So how was the food? As you can see from the photos, we tried the fish tacos and the fish n chips – admittedly, not going for anything new or daring. But the point for me was to rate some of the more mainstream fair against other eateries in the area. I like to consider myself a bit of an aFISHionado on fish n chips (see what I did there) if such actually existed. The FnC from California Fish Grill were perfectly battered, large pieces of white fish that I will assume was tilapia or pollock. As you can see from photo, the order came with 3 large pieces of fish and a generous portion of lightly seasoned fries. For this decent size meal, patrons will pay just under $9, a great deal. The restaurant has a number of craft brews from San Diego craft brewery Karl Strauss Brewing Company on tap including a “Belgian brown ale” that I must try sometime as well as a number of other foreign and domestic beers in bottles and cans. The restaurant is small in a very competitive eating area of the Patios at the Westfield Valencia Mall (right next to Lucille’s). When this location gets its own Yelp page, I will rate it 5 out of 5 stars. cafishgrill/home
