Thank you to Neville Andpeter Stokes & Jenny Lewis Its the 10th November, the old soldier sleeps in his bed On the table beside him, a small splash of red To a Civvy its a symbol of lives that were lost To ex Forces its Remembrance, whatever the cost A civvy cannot understand the bond we all share How can they know, they were not there Yes they have mates, and they laugh and they drink But are they so close that they know how you think They meet after work and go home at 11 But soldiers are together 24/7 Yes we stand together during the bad and the good In the snow and the rain, in a North German wood When you come off stag, and youre soaked to the skin Well make you a brew and welcome you in And when things are hard and your going off track Well tease and insult you, but well bring you back And so the soldier awakes and gets dressed up all fine His suit neatly pressed on his shoes a deep shine His Regimental badges he shows off with pride Although only his comrades can see the hurt inside On parade he marches, his medals are gleaming And if you look closely, youll see his eyes streaming And as he marches forwards, and lays down his wreath His Comrades beside him can all feel his grief And as he salutes and looks up to the skies A look full of pride seems to shine from his eyes And as the civvies look on completely unaware The ghosts of his comrades are all standing there They salute, about turn and march silently away But he knows hell march with them on another day For once your a soldier, forever youll be A soldier, and youll be in fine company For when a soldier dies and reaches Heavens Gate No matter how long, his comrades will wait And theyll welcome him in, with banter and beer And the sign on the Gate says Forces welcome here So when we wear a poppy although its unspoken We all share a bond that can never be broken So if you died on the Somme, Afghanistan or elsewhere Theyll welcome you in because you belong there This poem is dedicated to all forces personnel who have lost their lives for whatever reason. Quis Separabit: ABSENT FRIENDS ..... WE WILL REMEMBER THEM..xx
