Thank you to all veterans who have served our country! Veterans Day gives all of us the opportunity to celebrate the patriotism, bravery, love of country and sacrifice of all U.S. veterans. It is sometimes confused with Memorial Day which is the day set aside to honor all Americans who have died while in the military service. Armistice Day was first established in 1919 as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of major hostilities with Germany in World War I which ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. In 1938, Armistice Day was made a legal holiday to be celebrated November 11th each year. After World War II, a World War II veteran, Raymond Weeks, wanted to expand Armistice Day to honor all veterans. In 1954, after having been through World War II and the Korean War, the law was amended replacing Armistice with Veterans at the urge of all the veterans groups. In 1971, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday in October in accordance with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act (to ensure three day weekends for all Federal employees). In 1978 it was moved back to November 11th.
