Today is: April Fools or All Fools Day: not a national holiday, but is widely recognized and celebrated in various countries as a day when people play practical jokes and hoaxes on each other, called April fools. Hoax stories are also often found in the press and media on this day. In 1957, the BBC pulled a prank, known as the Swiss Spaghetti Harvest prank, where they broadcast a fake film of Swiss farmers picking freshly-grown spaghetti. The BBC were later flooded with requests to purchase a spaghetti plant, forcing them to declare the film a prank on the news the next day. Ha! Boomers dont like to celebrate birthdays, so today is a non-threatening celebration. International Tatting Day: Tatting is the skill of making delicate, elegant tatted lace. It is enjoyed by thousands of people. On this day, tatters around the world have different activities, mostly educational, to celebrate their hobby, and introduce it to others. Often, they celebrate by eating chocolates and making tatted lace. Library Snap Shot Day: provides a way for libraries of all types across a state, region, system or community to show what happens in a single day in their libraries. How many books are checked out? How many people receive help finding a job? Doing their taxes? Doing their homework? This initiative provides an easy means to collect statistics, photos and stories that will enable library advocates to prove the value of their libraries to decision-makers and increase public awareness. National Fun at Work Day: a day to have fun at work for once. Ideally, work should be fun. But normally, work is not intended to have fun. Its intended to get work done. Youre a very lucky person, if you if you can get work done and have fun doing it. The lucky souls in this situation, love their job. Unfortunately, all of us are not lucky enough to have a job thats fun to do. If thats you, then today is a day just for you! Think of ways to make your job more fun and exciting. Look to do some fun things at work today, even if it takes away from production just a wee bit. Please Note: If you do fun things today that is counter-productive, or takes you away from the job, make sure you get your boss permission first. Better still, get him or her involved. Reading is Funny Day: a great time to show kids that reading is both fun and funny. Check out joke and riddle books from your local library. Play Old Maid or Memory. Let kids make paper bag puppets and glue reproducible riddles on the back. Dream up your own ways to motivate kids to read just for the fun of it. St. Stupid Day: Annual wacky procession on April Fool’s Day. If youre in San Francisco, Wear something silly, bring your solo socks, spare pennies and losing lottery tickets and gather with all the other stupids at the Embarcadero Plaza (foot of Market Street) at noon. Odd costumes, noise makers, satiric signage on the ‘business of religion’ and ‘the religion of business’ are encouraged. National Sourdough Bread Day: Records of the consumption and eating of sourdough bread date back as far as the Sumerians in 2800bce. Sourdough is similar to bread dough, except that the natural yeasts are left to ferment in the bread mix. So.....Watch out for all the foolery going on today!
