Thanks Bruce Mercer..THERES A LOT TO BE SAID FOR SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS self righteousness is just another name for self sufficiency. its a horrible trait for a lot of reasons. first, its always a lie.nobody is that righteous, and no one is that sufficient. second, it requires a mask. if we wear the mask long enough, it will make us phony and empty. third, it will cause others to label us hypocrites. if people do not know us, it will cause them to either run in the opposite direction or become as sick as we are. but more important than anything else, self-righteousness will kill any hope we have of ever being free, forgiven, and able to live in some kind of reasonable peace with ourselves. most of us are into self-righteousness (including christians, pagans, conservatives, liberals, progressives and everyone else are too). self-righteousness is addictive and more and more of it is required to get that initial kick. before long we are waiting foe a vacancy in the Trinity and wondering where our friends have gone. the self-righteous as a rule hang out with the self-righteous and its the stuff that churches and revolutions are made. there is a difference between self-righteousness and convictions, but it is a short trip and we rarely remember making the trip. it makes us feel good and after a while it defines us and how we see ourselves. it creates in us an us versus them mentality and us is always right. self-righteousness starts with convictions (a good thing), then moves to discussion (another good thing) and finally falls into the devils trinity of dismissal, demonization, and destruction (some very bad things). the most salient thing about self-righteousness is that it creates blindness. i.e. it is hardly ever diagnosed or acknowledged by someone who is self-righteous. this disease is killing us, and the tragedy is that we dont even know it. the solution is the gospel because it is the power of God unto salvation and in it is revealed the imputed righteousness of Christ - from faith to faith as it is written, the just shall live by faith.
