Thanks Vignesh for passing on the baton. These posts tend to be long and this one would be too :) It is in the order of maturity and my order of reading them too. This post is not meant to showcase what I have read but to rekindle an affair with books that has faded temporarily in me. Avidly reading books was a major part of my childhood and teenage, but it has been replaced over recent years by either no reading, casual reading or very serious reading instead. I am certain this is the case for a lot of my friends. This trend is a nudge for me and my friends to read more again. I borrow thoughts and ideas on many occasions and why shouldnt we, if there are good thoughts sewn into better words by great writers. These are books from where I have borrowed words and wisdom on many instances and that have shaped me. 1. The Wishing Chair - Enid Blyton. This book deserves a special mention because it was the first book I remember reading for hours at length. The books before this were Indian stories from Panchatantra and Arabian Nights, but The Wishing Chair and The Faraway Tree series captured my imagination and took me to a different world. The Famous Five Series, The Adventure Series, The Five Find Outers, The Three Investigators, The Secret Seven Series, The Hardy Boys, Goosebumps series, The Time Machine, Moby Dick, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Kim, Heidi, Chacha Choudhary - Various Authors. These books pronounced adventure in every page! And that quest has definitely stayed. I can still visualise the descriptions from a lot of these books. 2. The Harry Potter Series- J. K. Rowling. I cannot tell for sure if I used to read the book or watch a movie in my head! But I never imagined Hermione to be as beautiful as Emma Watson in my head, such a shame! 3. Alchemist- Paulo Coelho. I remember feeling inspired and full of hope for tomorrow as a 15 year old when I read this book. 4 - 1. The Monk who sold his Ferrari - Robin Sharma. I am not sure if I read this book today and would find it equally intriguing but it definitely had tools for a teenager like me to think and decide who I wanted to be. 4 - 2. The Secret- Rhonda Byrne. This book and the video inspired me on many occasions and has definitely been a source for positivism. 5 - 1. Papillon - Henri Charriere. An account of Henri Charrieres life that is so stirring that it left me shaken for a few days. But again a story of will against all odds. 5 - 2. The White Tiger - Arvind Adiga. The dark form of writing this Booker Prize Winner brings is gripping and exciting. 5 - 3. Godfather - Mario Puzo. The Classic. 6. Thousand Spledid Sons- Khalid Hosseini. This book deserves a mention, because after my tryst with The Kite Runner, I was looking forward to another book from Khaled, but could not push myself to complete the book as the initial parts of the story were deeply saddening. 7 - 1. Fundamentals of Physics - Halliday Resnick Walker. The sheer joy of being able to make more sense of the occurrences around us and the simplicity with which it was presented made this book a joy ride instead of an academic pursuit. 7 - 2. Brief History of Time - Stephen Hawking. This book and a lot of the principles of our universe spoken in our scriptures align. I loved the simplicity with which the book conveyed complex principles of our universe and of Physics. 7 - 3. Nikola Tesla: Imagination and the Man That Invented the 20th Century. A biography of Tesla and his pursuits. This book brings to life the potentials of human mind and the greatness of this yogi. Inspiring. 8. Savita Bhabhi- Unknown. Too bad the website was pulled down. The illustrations were a work of art! :D 9 - 1. Jaya - Devdutta Pattanaik. What Mahabharata offered us on television was offered in an even more delightful and creative manner by this book. 9 - 2. The Shiva Trilogy - Amish Tripathi. Storytelling done well by an Indian Author. I know a lot more about our ancient stories now thanks to this book. 9 - 3. Hiccups - Harsh Pande. If I ever write a book, it would be thanks to this man here! The books here on are not mere books, but are scriptures that are a medium for thoughts to be embodied and passed on to generations. A must read for every seeker and any Indian who takes pride in our culture. 11 - 1. Scientists Search for Truth - Swami Virajeshwara. Soul Stirring. This is an autobiography of a research scientist at IBM who renounces everything and goes to Himalayas in search for Truth. Absolutely earnest, brilliantly educative to a seeker, at times humorously entertaining, Scientists search fro Truth reveals what the Realisation actually is in simple words of a Realised person and takes the reader along with the author to the abode of eternal peace. 11 - 2. Know your Reality - I & II - Swami Virajeshwara. A question and answer compilation of wisdom from Swami. As simple as it gets. 11 - 3. Autobiography of a Yogi - Swami Yogananda. A cult for all times, this book is a medium for ancient Gurus to pass on the wisdom of ages through the autobiography of one saint. A movie adaptation of this book is coming soon. A must read for every Indian! I would like to hear from you guys now. if you feel like it, do post a list of books that have moulded you. No Pressure!
