Thanks for the street memories Jan - they say a picture paints a thousand words - how about a thousand words to paint a picture - lol - enjoy!! The Kids Of Vale Estate – by Colin Raine “Pitch, patch pepper” – girls were skipping in the street Boys never got the hang of it – too many bloody feet! We were better playing tag or tiggy – or running round the block Or hiding, seeking, fighting and shouting and generally running amok. There stood poor old Bill – vigilantly guarding the den He’d captured Trev and Dave and Butt – the hardcore of our men. But creeping up behind him quietly - came brave old little me With a “1,2,3 Raliveno!!!! – and the whole lot of them ran free! Hours and hours of kicking that caser* up and down the street Hit it wrong and the bloody laces nearly half crippled your feet Mind you if you tried to head it – it didn’t half bloody well hurt You’d end up with a two-inch gash on your brow - and a lump of ground-in dirt! *Vale Estate slang for a caseball – leather and laces around a pig’s bladder! (often flat!) Then we’d end up being a “lamp-post” – and to see how far we could spit The further we got – the nearer the base – I was never very good at it Or “Farmer Farmer can we cross your golden water in a ferry boat?” With four letter “i” s in my name - that game always got my vote! With cries of “lurkey 1-2-3”,“Simon Says” or “No Girls On” “Queenio Coco who’s got the ball?” and the sun it soon was gone Then a chorus of our mothers would start - bellowing out our names To bring an end to another day of all our favourite games. I look at all the streets today – chocker-block with nowt but cars No kids – no balls – no skipping ropes – no fishing nets and jars. All replaced by pseudo reality and all sorts of visual games And everybody is staring intently at their miniature true-colour frames! They will never know the joys of hopscotch – and the well aimed piece of slate Or hurtling down Mayfield Hill on a Beano Book and skate! No train books, I spy books, catapults or peashooters All victims of their virtual life they live through their computers!
