Thanks to Michael Ray and Phil Melone for sharing these amazing cloud photos from Saturday. John Gerard explains what type they are and how they’re formed.. “These are called gravity wave clouds. Like waves you would see in the ocean except these are in the atmosphere. Clouds prefer a flat stable surface, they are lazy and do not want to be disturbed. However, clouds are pulled upward through convection or downward through compression. When both are occurring at the same time they give this rolling appearance that looks like waves. Theyre not dangerous; it just indicates that a disturbance is trying to take over, but other forces are fighting against it. Keep on sharing your weather photos - we love them!
