Thanks to Mike Rowe for pointing this out. Now if only Hollywood knew its own history. TV interviewers (talking heads, empty otherwise) are promoting this by saying that Errol Flynn was the movies very first action star. Pearl White or Douglas Fairbanks ring a bell? QUESTION: Why do some films which take place in the past look natural while many others look costumed and overly art-directed? This seems to fall into the latter category. Is it because everyones clothing looks crisp and new? I never could put my finger on it. Compare this to something like DAY OF THE LOCUST or CHINATOWN (and THE TWO JAKES) where it all looks so natural… Or THE RAT PACK where even the tuxedoes look faked (although I like the film!).
