QUESTION: Why do some films which take place in the past look natural while many others look costumed and overly art-directed? This seems to fall into the latter category. Is it because everyones clothing looks crisp and new? I never could put my finger on it. Compare this to something like DAY OF THE LOCUST or CHINATOWN (and THE TWO JAKES) where it all looks so natural… Or THE RAT PACK where even the tuxedoes look faked (although I like the film!).
