In ones life Saturn transits for a period of 7 1/2 years (with 3 phases of 2 1/2 years each) in a span of 30 years and in ones life one can see a maximum of four sade sati sani transits. The persons in age group 0 to 22 years may experience first such sade sati and that period is called mangu sani. During this period of 7 1/2 years one may see ill health, but some favourable period for the father of the native. The persons in age group 23-52 years may experience second such sade sati and that period is called Pongu sani. During this period of 7 1/2 years one may see favours from the indication of saturns position, but some unfavourable period for the father of the native. The persons in age group 53-82 years may experience third such sade sati and that period is called marana sani. During this period of 7 1/2 years one may feel ill health leading to death from the indication of saturns position, and will not be good enough for both the parents of the native. The persons in age group 83-112 years may experience the fourth cycle and very very rarest of rare people like Acharya Ramanuja may live beyond this span also to a full life span of 120 years. Whatever the cycle may be mangu or pongu or marana or 4th the general tendency of Saturns clutch is to teach a man to be obedient and giving rich experience. However in this process one may get big punishment even for a minor one, such as going late to work, even though rarely, one may lose a good customer or big business loss. One may get pardon for a big loss also if the native chart itself is having powerful yogas. Saturn is the one which has got the status of Eshwaran. We call him a Sanishwar. Recent example for the pardon is an executive of Adani group. Due to wrong decision of the executive, the company made a good loss to the order of some crore rupees. The executive without waiting for action from boss, tendered resignation, Yet through the magnanimity of Chairman Adani, who said that, he was sure, the exec will not make the same mistake again, who has rich experience on this, and on losing him, some other (read competitor) will be benefited by hiring him. So he pardoned him and asked to continue. There is no way out during the clutches of Sani, apart from lying low and learn patience and bear all insults and agony. Lord Krishna Himself had to face apavadam or veen pazhi or false accusation of capturing Shyamantak mani by killing a relative, which he later proved to be false. Lord Shiva: Even the Lord Shiva, the master of Saturn was not an exception. He made Saturn to look after the His abode mount Kailash. Saturn made a treaty with him that he will manage under a condition that there should not be any Mahal – read palace constructed during his management in the province, and will be demolished by Saturn if violated. Lord Shiva agreed. This treaty was not known to Parvati Devi. She one day raised a beautiful palace with the help of Vishwakarma in just one days time. When Lord came to know of this, told His consort about the treaty and said Saturn is bound to destroy it. Devi felt sad and told Him that Sani is a obedient Deva and servant of Him and he will forgive me. But if he is sticking to rule then You please drum the Udukkai – the hand drum forcefully. On hearing the sound, I will destroy the mahal myself without giving opportunity to Sani. Eshwar called sani and asked him to forgive. Sani said, he will do under one compromise -to see his Ananda Thandavam – or celestial happy dance. In earlier occasion of Ananda Thandavam Sani was was not allowed with the consent of Eshwar which was enacted before Devas, as Devas were afraid that Sanis drishti will bring out a big loss for them. Eshwar obliged to Sani and started performing Ananda Thandavam. In the process, He drummed and the music of Udukkai was heard by Devi and she destroyed the palace immediately. Thus the treaty also was fulfilled. Lord Anjaneya. Lord Anjaneya had his period to get into the clutches of Sani. Sani somehow or other entered the body of Hanuman (Anjaneya). Hanuman came to know of it and simply whiled away his time without any adventure and eating a humble of pie of fruits and nuts from the forest. Time came when Sani has to leave and continue his Dharma of trim the people. He tried his best to come out of Hanuman, but he could not, because of Hanumans powers. Lastly, Sani begged Him to release for the benefit of the world. Hanuman asked him to leave the same way how he entered, even then he could not and finally, Hanuman picked up a hair from his body and pulled it, to give him an exit through the hole created by it. If you cannot be patient to Sanis behaviour, take a recourse in Hanuman, he will make yourself to be patient and at the same time protect from Ukram or Anger of Sani. Even in our city, Kerala Namboodris made a deiva prashnam at Lord Ayyappa temple sometime in 1993-94 and said that the deity had attained Ukram and will not do good to the worshipers. True to their words, there were accidents to the family members of people associated with the temple, Frequent deaths, Court cases against some VIP of the temple who moved away from here after selling his properties and so on. As a remedy for that time being, the Namboodri advised them to remove the deity and put in a corner of Hanuman Sannidhi. Ayyappa Pujas were performed at Hanuman Sannidhi until another Panchaloha statue was brought in and installed in main Sannidhi and performing Kumbabhishekam etc. The original Stone idol was said to be immersed in the river with all respect. There is an interesting story how Saturn lost one of his legs. Ravana when the birth time time of his son Meghnath arrived, arranged all navagrahas – the nine planet devtas to take a very appropriate position and to stand still without moving to other houses of the birth chart of his child until his birth and he stood looking at all nava devtas with a sword to kill anyone who moved. All planets were afraid of Ravana and stood still, looking at Sani, as of begging him to take up the challenge. Sani at an appropriate time jumped from 11th to 10th or so. (Anyone who is seeing this can acknowledge if 10th to 11th or 11th to 10th or any other house. Ravana applied his sword and that chopped off a leg of Saturn. (I think the story goes as right leg).
