That Desert Life - Man, Im seriously getting soft in my old age. Just stepped outside to let Charley out to go do his business, and I was sitting out on the patio with him, and I have my hydronic car jack sitting on the patio next to me. Charley walked by the car jack, and sniffed, and I heard a very distinct sound that I have not heard in person for well over 20yrs growing up in Texas, but I knew immediately it was a rattlesnake. Charley immediately ran away, and I grabbed him threw him in the house, and knew there was a job to be done. The inner Buddhist in me doesnt want to kill any of Gods creatures. Im sure the snake was stoked to find a really nice cool spot under the jack out of the desert sun, waiting until night fall so he could move again in the cool desert night. Unfortunately, you just cant catch and release a rattlesnake, anywhere near your property. So, there was only one outcome to this scenario. I caught the snake, and literally had to fight my inner self conscious to go ahead, and kill the snake. Everything in me was saying once I had him caught just to put him in a box, and take him off and release him. Then my inner common sense said this snake could bite me, or my dog at any moment, and kill either of us if I released him, and stumbled onto him again. I absolutely feel horrible for killing the snake, but somethings just have to be done. Still doesnt make me feel any better about it. Its so funny how times change. The first time I ever killed a Rattlesnake alone I was about 8yrs old, and my little sister had literally just walked right across the snake in the back of our house. I ran in got my gun, and shot, and killed the snake, and rejoiced in being, and feeling like a hero. Saved my little sister from the evil pit viper. Today, I just wished the snake would have picked a different spot so our paths never had to cross. The victim below
