That the Kwani Trust has finally released the names of the winners for the 2013 Africa manuscript project is great news in this year of our golden jubilee. I say great news because if Kwani publishes the three winning manuscripts, actually if it prints the seven short-listed scripts, it will have broken significant ground in the production and dissemination of Kenyan/African literature. These are not the grounds on which the Trust has sold itself to Kenyans before, as reawakening a sleepy literary landscape in Kenya. No, that claim is just that: a feel good claim! I can vouch that Kenyan (African) writers don’t suffer from sleeping sickness as it is often alleged.
