The 1,582-page omnibus appropriations bill is the product of the $1.012 trillion Ryan-Murray budget that I voted against. It cancels a portion of the sequester in an effort to increase spending now with a promise of cuts down the road. If Washington is unwilling to cut spending today, why should we believe they will reduce spending in the distant future? Further, the Omnibus funds Obamacare and contains several policy riders that can only be described as earmarks. The bill does not address duplicative programs or government waste. Instead of finding bipartisan ways to spend more money, Congress should be focused on reducing the deficit. The federal budget needs to be balanced as quickly as possible. This bill does not achieve that goal. We should not be kicking the can down the road. I will not support a budget that mortgages our children’s and grandchildren’s future by increasing debt and spending. We must act now to keep our country from going bankrupt. I voted “NO” on H.R. 3547. The bill passed 359-67.
