The 1s were in action on Saturday against the University of Manchester in the CESKL. Half the team had been poached by the GB Students squad for the day but nevertheless the 1s anticipated a straightforward match, having beaten Manchester without too much difficulty earlier in the season. This wasn’t to be, however; a Manchester player suffered an ankle injury early on in the match, and the substituteless away side were forced to continue with three boys for the rest of the match. With coaches for the two teams away on national team duty, both sides initially struggled to adjust to this unexpected turn of events and the match slowed to a glacial pace. However, stand-in captain Merrick stepped up to the mark and a reinvigorated team returned to the pitch after his half-time talk. The 1s managed a tasty 10 goals in the second half, cruising to a 14-7 victory - a welcome confidence boost as training kicks up a gear in preparation for BUCS Nationals.
