The 2013 Seattle performances of DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN conducted by Asher Fisch have now been released on Avie CD. Reviewing the cycle in the Awards issue of GRAMOPHONE magazine, Mike Ashman praises a compelling Valkyrie from Seattles latest Brit import. Alwyn Mellor (again, as we have heard at Leeds and Longborough) has an attention to detail and dynamics reminiscent of Anne Evans. She never forces, never shows off but steers through the part with a beacon-like concentration, especially effective in the moments with Wotan, Waltraute and Siegfried where Brünnhilde sings again after much listening. An impressive, valuable performance with a good balance of the roles vocal peaks. In summing up, he writes, The musical achievement here is more than good enough to demand attention outside of Seattle, especially the performances of Fisch, Mellor and the character tenors.” Alwyn Mellor’s engagements this season include Senta / DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER for the Florentine Opera Company and Opera North, Brünnhilde / SIEGFRIED at Symphony Hall, Boston, and Isolde / TRISTAN UND ISOLDE at the Opéra national de Bordeaux.
