The 2014 Maxxis British Motocross Championship, Round Eight, Foxhill. Kristian Whatley, Lewis Trickett and Carlton Husband with the rest of the MBO Sport ASA Scaffolding Yamaha team went down the M4 to the Foxhill motocross track to take part in the eighth and final round of the 2014 Maxxis British Motocross Championship and came away with some mixed results. Rain in the previous week and on Saturday left the hilly, stony, hard and fast hillside track in excellent condition for racing with a good crowd turning up to spectate. In the MX1 class Kristian qualified sixth but failed to improve on his gate pick slot in superpole, but the long start straight made it less important. In race one Kristian gated fourth and spent most of the race battling with his long term rival and ex-champion Brad Anderson while fast starter Elliott Banks-Browne held off the eventual winner Graeme Irwin. Banks-Browne held on to second with Anderson third as Kristian came home in a lonely fourth place. Kristian didn’t get the start he wanted in race two and came round the first turn way back in tenth place, but within seven laps Kristian was up to fourth place with Anderson right behind him. Banks-Brown held off the attentions of Erwin to win his first MX1 race with a returning to form Martin Barr third, from Anderson with Kristian fifth. Shaun Simpson, this year’s new champion got the holeshot at the start of the third and final race of the year with Banks-Browne second, from Irwin, Nathan Watson with Kristian fifth. The race was marred when I rider crashed at the top of the biggest triple jump in the track which resulted in waved yellow flags over a large part of the track. While Simpson and Banks-Browne continued at the front of the back, Watson was seen to overtake two riders within the waved yellows and was docked ten places in the results. This meant it was a win for Simpson with the hard charging Anderson second from Banks-Brown with Kristian fourth. Kristian was fourth overall and consolidated his second place to Simpson in the final championship standings. After he said, “I was happy with qualifying and superpole but come the first race I didn’t get a good start but managed to pull through for a reasonable finish. In the second I got lent on round the first turn that put me back to about tenth place. I managed again to pass some riders for a fifth place. The start of the last race was OK but I washed out a bit in turn two that lost me a couple of places. I managed to pass Nathan (Watson) but then he passed me back under a yellow flag, so I don’t know what’s happening about that. I was fourth overall in the end but I was a tough weekend” Of the teams two MX2 riders Lewis had an up and down sort of a day, while Carlton struggled all day and with no points in race two he wasn’t happy with his day. In race one, Lewis started tenth and made his way up to eighth before slipping off and falling back to twelfth place. He recovered to finish in eleventh place with Carlton in sixteenth. It was much the same for Lewis in race two as he started fourth but once again slipped off mid race and finished eighth while Carlton finished out of the points. The last race was a disaster for Lewis but really showed how fast a young rider he is as after he tangled with Bryan Mackenzie on the opening lap he passed over half the field of his fellow races and finished in twelfth place, one place ahead of his team mate Carlton. After racing was finished for the day Lewis said, “I was happy with the way qualifying and superpole went as I ended up with seventh pick on the start gate. I crashed in the first race which wasn’t very good, but got my head down and went in the second and was going well in fourth till I stalled the bike at the top of the course, which was a sill mistake to make. In the last race after the re-start I was going well but had a coming together with Bryan (Mackenzie) at the top of the hill and was dead last and spent the rest of the race trying to get back up to the leaders” Lewis finished tenth on the day with Carlton sixteenth, but in the championship Lewis finished in twelfth place, dispite missing almost four rounds through injury. The team’s next outing will be the last round of the MX Nationals in two weeks’ time and is back at Foxhill.
