The 25 Days of Great Singers Day 25: Otis Redding Otis Redding - TopicsExpress

The 25 Days of Great Singers Day 25: Otis Redding Otis Redding is without a doubt one of my favorite singers of all time. He was with us for far too short of a time and we truly missed out on what more he could have done. There are many singers out there with more technique and a larger range, but few if any could match the choices he made and the emotion he could convey. He had the voice of an experienced old soul long before he was ever able to become so. At a young age he was already sought out by all the best musicians out there who wanted to play and sing with him. His first single These Arms of Mine was instantly classic and like no one else. (Sittin On) The Dock of the Bay, Try a Little Tenderness, Respect, (famously covered by Aretha Franklin, but it was his song), Knock On Wood, there are so many songs he did that were incredible. My favorite story is about the whistling at the end of (Sittin On) The Dock of the Bay. Most of Otis songs ended with him scatting in his iconic way and he planned on doing the exact same thing with this song. But he hadnt come up with something yet, so he just whistled to fill in and planned on going back later to overdub something. The tragedy of course is that on December 10, 1967 at the age of just 26, he died in a plane crash. He never got to finish that song but as good as he was, the whistling he used as filler has become iconic and beloved. He was a rare talent and the world was lucky to have had him for the short time we did. Heres one of the best Christmas songs ever done. White Christmas Otis Redding-Style...
