The 6 candidates for Cook were each asked to respond to the following statement and state their policy. “Unconventional gas mining in Queensland, specifically at Mt Mulligan, with the potential impacts on the quality of water in aquifers, streams, the Gulf and the Great Barrier Reef, chemical toxicity, health, depletion of water reserves as well as potential impacts on communities landholders, heritage, and cultural values, tourism, fishing and prawn industries”. Candidate responses: Katter’s Australian Party candidate Lee Marriott “I oppose CSG in all forms and did so before joining the Katter’s Australian Party. My party share my view and has made opposition to CSG a core policy. I believe that the potential long term damage to our water aquifers, farmlands and to the reef is not worth the gamble. Aside from the environmental damge I believe CSG is exploitation of our coal resource and once installed it does not provide enough long term jobs to be beneficial to the community. I have witnessed CSG extraction first hand at both Moranbah and Emerald”. Australian Labor party candidate Billy Gordon: No response Independent candidate Michaelangelo Newie: No response Liberal National Party David Kempton: “There is no coal seam gas mining conventional/unconventional proposed for Mt Mulligan or anywhere in Cook electorate. In the event there is an application then it will be dealt with in the appropriate manner, taking into account considerations such as environmental impact, employment prospects, native title considerations, social impacts and landholder consent. I will make my decision upon any such application being made and will not comment any further on hypothetical’s. There are many real and pressing issues I am far more concerned with”. Queensland Greens candidate Darryl Desjardin; “The Greens believe that Coal Seam Gas (CSG) is not a clean transition fuel because of the future potential for fugitive methane emmisssions associated with extraction and distribution. CSG may prove to be more damaging to the climate than coal. The modern mining sector is capital intensive compared to other sectors of the economy. A switch in investment to renewable energy will generate substantially more jobs than are currently available in the fossil fuel sector. The Greens oppose coal seam gas exploration and production and associated pipeline and export
