The 64th graduation ceremony of Makerere University was started yesterday in freedom square ground in Makerere University and will be finished on Friday 30th Jan which around forty thousand person will attend. Many political figures from the political parties, officials from international and nation Organizations and the administrative staff of the University do attend this ceremony. When the chancellor of the university, Prof. Kagonyera was speaking at the ceremony yesterday he mentioned as an academic institution what should be their contribution in averting the ongoing instability in the region such as in south Sudan, DRC and Somalia. He did not look far for an answer and he said “academic institutions are better placed to nurture strong leaders, with a focus on installing in them not only a humanitarian spirit but also a desire to positively contribute to society, human conflict has various origins which academia seeks to address through the various courses on offer, therefore the graduates go out in to the world, we want them to challenge their selves to see how they can contribute to peace all over the world, in their own humble discipline-specific way. Also The vice chancellor, Prof Ssentamu, said that Makerere University has maintained her position as a research-led university with more ground breaking reasrech across the colleages and that all research initiatives aim at finding solutions to the problems pressing society and are in line with our strategic focus, makerere University is undoubtedly on the right path to establishing herself as the regional research and innovations hub. In this ceremony, 12615 grandaunts will be awarded their respective awards, of which 6341 are female and 6274 are Male. In percentage, 50.3 are Females while 49.7% are males (my first time ever to see graduants where females dominate males in number). The awards that will be conferred to these students are more than 50 PhDs, 101 different Masters, 98 different degrees, 10 post-graduate diplomas and 9 different undergraduate diplomas. The sad news is that among those who are going to graduate in this university, almost 5% are Muslim students while around 20% of the whole Uganda Population are Muslim people, which means that Ugandan muslims are not doing well in number in Makerere University.
